Therapy That Comes From the Heart.
Hello, and thank you for being here. It takes courage to seek a new path, and my goal is to walk alongside you on that journey with empathy and understanding.
My name is Marshall McLean, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate and the founder of Heartland Marriage and Family Therapy. I chose the name 'Heartland' because I believe that true healing begins at our core—the place where our mind, body, and spirit connect. It’s the center from which we can learn to live more authentic, wholehearted lives. My therapeutic work is built on this belief, offering a safe, non-judgmental space where you can feel truly seen and heard. Whether you are navigating the complexities of a relationship, the depths of grief, or the unique pressures of modern life, our work together will be a compassionate exploration of your story to uncover your innate strengths and find a way forward.
My Education and Approach to Therapy
I earned both my Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and my Bachelor of Arts in Counseling from Whitworth University, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA) in Washington.
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, my core belief is that we can’t be understood in isolation. The challenges we face are deeply connected to our relationships, family dynamics, and life experiences. I don't see these as just the source of our struggles; I believe they also hold the most powerful keys to our healing and growth. This perspective is the foundation of all our work together.
My primary approach is Narrative Therapy. I see you as the expert in your own life. Together, we’ll explore the stories that have shaped you and your relationships. The goal isn’t to erase your history, but to help you find new perspectives and "re-author" your story in a way that feels more empowering and aligns with the future you want.
Building on that foundation, I integrate other specialized approaches when they fit your specific needs:
For couples, I often use the research-backed Gottman Method. This provides a practical framework for rebuilding friendship, navigating conflict constructively, and creating a more profound sense of shared meaning and partnership.
To understand family dynamics, we can draw from Bowen Family Systems. This helps us see how patterns, sometimes passed down through generations, might be influencing you today, to help you be your own person while staying meaningfully connected to those you love.
When addressing trauma, I take a gentle and specialized approach. We can use methods like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for specific distressing events, or Lifespan Integration to help your mind and body process and heal from past experiences, making them a part of your story instead of something that defines it.
Current Certifications include:
Gottman Method Couples Therapy - Level 1
Lifespan Integration - Level 1
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) - Externship Level 1
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
As a Licensure Associate, I practice under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth (Bethy) Campbell, a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
